"PANCHO" ARTURO SALINAS

Only part time jobs were available during the 1940's and into the 50's; my dad claimed that he had worked for almost every RANCHERO in St. Paul.  Arturo became my dad when he married my mother Maria and adopted me.  Confirming many of his stories is a special PRIVILEGE!..He liked being called "Pancho"… a feeling of acceptance.  Dad passed away in 1995.

His stories and adventures are a testimony to the Tex-Mex American Experience in Oregon.  A Tejano at heart, but an Oregonian too!  1.5.2016

Nick Names can distort history!

1980 photo of my dad-Arturo- helping me remodel an old house.

IN THE 1950'S HARDLY ANYONE KNEW MY DAD AS "ARTURO"

"Pancho" was my dad's nick name in St. Paul.  The locals decided to give him a nick name which my dad gladly accepted.    With no other Spanish speaking men around and the popularity of the TV program Cisco and Pancho I can understand the novelty.  Sam Smith from St. Paul also recalled a Pancho, but not an Arturo.
